In just over three years, iTunes U downloads have topped 300 million — making it one of the world's most popular online educational catalogs. JM Family — an $8 billion diversified automotive company and the largest Toyota distributor on the planet — has integrated iPhone and business apps available in the App Store into all of their daily operations. The Los Angeles Times reports that Apple's iAd mobile advertising platform is “getting favorable reviews from the companies whose advertisements were the first to run on the new system.” The article quotes Joe Jacoby, a senior manager of Nissan's media operations, who says, “What iAd promises is the most progressive thing I've seen to date” in digital advertising.

PC Magazine makes the new quad-core 27-inch iMac an Editors' Choice, calling it “a highly sophisticated, yet simple to use media PC.” The magazine found the new iMac to be faster than other all-in-one models they've recently tested and concludes that it “cements the Apple iMac as the all-in-one desktop to have and to beat.”

Editor Bradley Buecker describes how he cut his first feature film, Eat Pray Love, using Final Cut Pro. To edit more than 70 hours of footage shot on location in New York, Italy, India, and Indonesia, Buecker found a fast, efficient editing format in ProRes 422 (Proxy), introduced in Final Cut Pro 7.

SF Weekly profiles a Redwood City mother, Shannon Rosa, who blogged that iPad had helped her nine-year-old autistic son, Leo. “With the iPad, Leo electrifies the air around him with independence and daily new skills,” she wrote. En 2002, Rambus avait tenté de contester sans succès un brevet déposé par IBM et qui était supposé être déjà couvert par leur volumineux catalogue de fonctions brevetées.
Fort de son succès face à NVidia et ayant maintenant les moyens de relancer de longues procédures grâce à l'argent que NVidia va leur donner, la société a décidé de remettre le couvert en contestant encore les brevets d'IBM.
On est donc de nouveau reparti pour une longue procédure dans laquelle les avocats seront les seuls à être certains de gagner.

Après avoir représenté jusqu'à 8% des machines connectées sur Steam, le Mac est redescendu à 5%. On peut attribuer cette baisse à la fin de l'effet nouveauté et surtout la fin des périodes de gratuité/promotions.
Les statistiques sont intéressantes à étudier:

• Près de la moitié des machines sous OS X sont des MacBook Pro (49,4%)
• Près de 58% des MAc ont 4 Go de RAM
• 28% ont une résolution en 1280x800 (Macbook et Macbook Pro 13").
• Plus de la moitié des machines ont un CPU dont la fréquence est comprise entre 2,3 et 2,69 GHz.

Il sera intéressant de voir si sur la durée Mac OS X arrive à dépasser les 5% de PDM. Il faudra pour ça que les utilisateurs de Mac prennent conscience qu'il existe de nouveau une offre de jeu sur leurs machines.

Faisant suite aux informations dont nous vous avions parlé hier, on sait maintenant que la puce graphique des processeurs Sandy Bridge sera cadencée par défaut à 850 MHz, soit 117 Mhz de plus que ce que propose actuellement Intel.

Le Turbo Boost 2 lui pemettra d'attendre la fréquence impressionnante de 1350 MHz, du jamais vu pour une solution graphique. S'il est certain que l'on pourra alors lire sans saccade du 1080p, nous nous demandons si Starcraft II pourrait s'en sortir avec.

Vous trouvez les nouveaux Mac Pro à 12 coeurs (2x6) trop fades ? Intel a concocté pour vous des processeurs dotés de 10 coeurs, les Westmere-EX. Ces puces gravées en 32 nm font communiquer leurs coeurs non seulement par des liens QPI, mais aussi par une cache L3 commune qui stockera les données les plus fréquemment utilisées et assurera le rôle de tampon de travail collaboratif.

Bien entendu, ces puces ne sont pas destinées à venir un jour équiper des Mac Pro, ce qui n'est pas plus mal étant donné les tarifs déjà inabordables des modèles à 12 coeurs.

Selon le très sérieux Bloomberg, Apple organisera un Special Event le 7 septembre pour y présenter son nouvel iPod Touch, mais aussi la version profondément revisitée de l'Apple TV vendu à 99$.
Ils devraient aussi annoncer les premiers épisodes de séries TV loués à 0,99$, une révolution dans ce domaine où ces séries étaient vendues bien trop chères par rapport au temps que l'on pouvait passer à les regarder et seulement dans de très rares cas à les revoir contrairement à des morceaux de musique.

Intel qui n'a pas digéré le succès insolent d'ARM sur le marché des mobiles et tablettes s'est trouvé un partenaire de poids, Nokia pour travailler sur ses prochaines puces destinées à ce marché.
Le fondeur n'y va pas par 4 chemins et annonce que sa prochaine plateforme sera plus économe en énergie que ce que propose ARM et bien entendu plus puissante.
Tout venant à point nommé, une étude commanditée par Nokia a indiqué que la chose la plus importante pour les utilisateurs de mobiles interrogés était l'autonomie des appareils avant tout autre critère.

Rendez-vous l'année prochaine pour savoir si Intel est capable de faire une plateforme X86 capable de concurrencer ARM sur ce qui sont devenues ses terres.

Voilà maintenant plusieurs années qu'Intel écrase littéralement AMD ne lui laissant que de faibles parts de marché, et l'ayant condamné à jouer sur la politique tarifaire plutôt que la puissance pour subsister. Les choses devraient changer en 2011 avec leurs APU, les processeurs dans lesquels seront greffées des puces graphiques dignes de ce nom.
Le fondeur a dévoilé quelques nouveaux détails sur ses produits qui seront lancés en 2011.

Les Bulldozer seront destinées aux ordinateurs de bureau et aux portables:

• Ces puces utiliseront une nouvelle approche afin de gérer aux mieux le multiCPU
• Elles supporteront de nouvelles instructions X86, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX...
• Elles auront des fonctions avancées d'économie d'énergie
• Elles seront gravées en 32 nm.

Bien entendu, c'est trop peu pour dire si ces puces seront capables de concurrencer en frontal les Sandy Bridge, mais la compétition est la plupart du temps bénéfique aux clients finaux.

Notez qu'AMD a aussi parlé de ses puces Bobcat dont l'immense avantage sera de consommer moins de 1W afin d'être intégrées dans de nombreux appareils nomades.

Avec sa PS3, Sony a démontré son savoir faire en terme de sécurité. Sa console a pendant des années réussi à bloquer toutes les tentatives d'intrusion des hackers qui s'y sont cassés les dents.
Il semble que cette époque soit terminée, si l'on en croit la société australienne OzMod.

Ils seraient sur le point de commercialiser une clé USB qu'Il suffirait d'insérer dans un connecteur de la PS3 afin de la débloquer. Elle permettrait de faire ce que les pirates appellent pudiquement des sauvegardes de jeux sur disque dur.
Si le Jailbreak de l'iPhone a été légalisé aux Etats-Unis, il n'en est pas de même pour les consoles de jeux. Les batailles juridiques entre ceux qui veulent les débloquer et les fabricants sont toujours d'actualité.

[MàJ] Sony a réagi avec vigueuren indiquant qu'ils seraient capables de détecter en ligne les consoles débloquées et qu'elles seraient bannies obligeant leurs possesseurs à en racheter une pour pouvoir de nouveau jouer en réseau. Il y a de quoi refroidir les plus téméraires.

Avec sa prochaine plateforme Intel mettra en place une nouvelle version de sa technologie Turbo Boost. Cette technologie permet d'augmenter de manière plus ou moins importante la fréquence d'un ou deux coeurs lorsque les autres sont inactifs et donc d'accélérer les traitements des logiciels ne supportant pas le multi CPU.
La nouvelle version du Turbo Boost sera plus agile et permettra de réaliser plus souvent et plus durablement cet overclock de certains coeurs. Pour y arriver, elle assurera une meilleure gestion de l'énergie des coeurs peu ou pas sollicités qui consommeront encore moins, de quoi libérer de l'énergie qui ira sur ceux qui seront overclockés sans dépasser l'enveloppe thermique globale.
La partie graphique insérée dans les processeurs sera aussi concernée par ce nouveau mode turbo et sera incluse dans le calcul de l'enveloppe thermique globale. Elle pourra aussi s'overclocker de manière indépendante des coeurs de quoi lui donner un coup de fouet (ce n'est pas du luxe) en cas de nécessité.

What's the Y2K38 bug?

Y2K38, or the Unix Millennium Bug, affects PHP and many other languages and systems which use a signed 32-bit integer to represent dates as the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. The furthest date which can be stored is 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Beyond that, the left-most bit is set and the integer becomes a negative decimal number — or a time prior to the epoch.

Yes, it's 28 years away and I'm sure many of you think it's ridiculous to worry about it now. However, developers thought that way about the Millennium bug the 1970's and 80's. Also, any web application which handles long-term future events could be at risk. For example, a typical mortgage runs for 25 years. Pensions and savings plans can be far longer.

Will 64-bit save us?

Probably. If you're using a 64-bit OS with a compiled 64-bit edition of PHP, your application shouldn't be affected. I'd recommend you test it, though. A signed 64-bit number gives a maximum future date which is 21 times greater than the current age of the universe — 292 billion years, give or take a day or two.

You can probably sleep at night if you're convinced your financial application will always be installed on a 64-bit system.

Are there alternative options?

Fortunately, PHP introduced a new DateTime class in version 5.2 (experimental support was available in 5.1 and be aware that some methods were introduced in 5.3)…

DateTime does not suffer from Y2K38 problems and will happily handle dates up to December 31, 9999. I might have paid off my mortgage by then!

It may not be worth upgrading existing applications, but you should certainly consider the DateTime class when planning your next project.

A few years ago I switched to an old fashion safety razor and haven't looked back. The latest entry into the razor market has reaffirmed my decision as the right one.

The new Pro Glide from Gillette only costs less than $10 to purchase. Good deal, right? Nope. The replacement blades cost $3-$4 each! Assuming you get a few weeks out of each blade, you're looking at paying between $6 and $10 every month to use this razor blade.

It's a great deal—for Gillette.

I use Merkur razor. I paid a lot, comparatively speaking, up front but I can buy better quality razors for less than $0.75 each. They last a lot longer and I end up with a much better shave.

I view the trade-off here as the same one you have to look at when deciding what framework you choose to develop your code in. There are a lot of frameworks that provide a lot of help getting off of the ground. It almost seems too easy.

Write your on custom blog in 5 minutes? Sure! Want to have a RESTful API? Add a couple of classes, some new routes, mark as complete.

Look at the framework and read some of the comments from its detractors. Those complaining generally have one of two problems:

They're going to complain about anything, they're just ranting. Ignore these people.

They've hit a legitimate pain point in the framework where they deviated too far from the intended use. Pay attention to what these people are talking about.

If you're application is significantly complex, no off-the-shelf framework is going to do everything you need it to. Some frameworks may even get in the way. Make sure you realize the trade-offs before you commit.

What makes a good framework?

The best ones serve as scaffolding—in the original meaning.

… a temporary structure used to support people and material in the construction or repair of buildings and other large structures.

Put another way for software development:

… helps you ramp up quickly, then gets out of the way.

Historically, frameworks manage the first part of this well. That's where they shine. It's the last part that they've had a problem with.

Django manages both of these well. My one complaint with it is that it manages the latter part better than the first. There's a lot of boilerplate needed to get started, but I can live with that. When my applications outgrow Django, removing Django from the equation is easy with one exception.

Models.

Models are like your razor's blades. Without blades, your razor doesn't shave; without models your application doesn't have any data to work with. The fix I've found works best for me is to keep my models then and put all of my logic for operating on them in other areas of the code base.

This separation helps me keep my business logic portable. I might be using the cheap route to get started, but the heavy lifting goes with me if I decide something else is a better fit.

jQuery is a popular JavaScript library which is used by many developers and applications. While using jQuery you need to write less code, writing functions is less complex and there are a lot of plugins you can use for free in your web application. Populate select menus with jQuery and Ajax

One of the most powerful jQuery function is the Ajax Suite. This example shows how-to populate a second select menu based on the option from the first select menu.

Just in case we have this select menu with the main categories:

If someone has changed the value for this select menu, we want to show the equivalent menu inside the span element with the ID “subcat”. To do this we use this jQuery snippet that makes an Ajax request to a PHP file called “getSubCat.php”. After the select menu is changed a loading image will show up (in case of slow Internet connections), the PHP script is called and the sub-select menu becomes visible.
